control systems engineer or senior. based syd, bne or mel

Automated robotic arms handling boxes on a conveyor in a warehouse.

Bespoke Automation Solutions.

Supportive employer with WFH flexibility.

Varied workload including: materials handling solutions / end-of-line and palletising systems / robot cells / manufacturing solutions.

We've been engaged by a well-established solutions provider in bespoke industrial automation systems to find an experienced or Senior Control Systems Engineer to join their growing team. The business builds purpose-engineered systems from the ground up — packaging machinery and material handling solutions, typically ranging from $500k to $4m per project. Every project is different, their pipeline is strong and their people enjoy significant variety.

About the Role

This is a hands-on senior engineering role with full ownership of the control systems function across the project lifecycle. Reporting to the Electrical Controls Manager, you will lead the design, development  and commissioning of control systems for bespoke machinery at manufacturing facilities and on customer sites locally, interstate,  as well as occasional work internationally.

You will be responsible for:

-  Electrical and control system design from scratch, using ladder logic platforms including Rockwell and Siemens systems

-  PLC programming and HMI development

-  Configuration of control system components — PLCs, HMIs, communications networks, VFDs, servo systems, safety controllers, safety light curtains, and field devices

-  Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) — producing pre-FAT and commissioning documentation and reports

-  Machine set-up, commissioning, and fault-finding on customer sites

-  Supervising and mentoring junior control systems engineers

-  Liaising with project engineers, mechanical design engineers, installation teams, and technicians throughout delivery

-  Providing (remote) technical support and, where required, training for customer maintenance and operations staff

About You

You are an experienced control systems engineer with a background in the design and commissioning of integrated industrial automation solutions — material handling, packaging machinery, intralogistics, or similar environments where mechanical and electrical systems come together at scale.

You have/are:

-  An Engineering degree in Electrical, Control Systems, or Mechatronics with 7+ years' post-graduate experience in a similar industry — or a trade-qualified electrician with 7+ years of commissioning and programming experience

-  Proven PLC experience with Rockwell Allen Bradley and/or Siemens — other platforms (Omron, Schneider) also considered where ladder logic fundamentals are strong

-  Demonstrable experience designing control systems from scratch, not just maintaining existing programs

-  A track record of running FAT and SAT processes and producing the associated documentation

-  Site commissioning experience across integrated systems — comfortable problem-solving under pressure when things don't go to plan on a customer site

-  Strong communication skills — clear with engineers and non-engineers alike

-  Valid Driver's Licence and existing right to work in Australia

-  Willingness to travel for commissioning

This is a rare opportunity to join an established specialist business with a genuine pipeline of varied, technically interesting project work. If you are looking for a role where no two projects are the same, where your engineering judgement is respected, and where the work you do is visible end to end, this is a strong fit. The business has a long-tenured team for good reason. They invest in the people who join them.

The role can be based in any of the 3 locations shown.
